Artist Bio

Contemporary Equine Artist | Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Gwen Marx is a contemporary equine artist based in Ottawa, Ontario, whose work explores the spirit of the horse and the emotions, relationships and experiences it can awaken within us. Working primarily in acrylic, Marx combines expressive brushwork with a fluid movement between realism and abstraction, creating paintings in which forms emerge, dissolve and become part of the surrounding atmosphere.

Drawn to art from an early age, Marx has been creating since childhood. At eight years old, she painted a mallard duck that caught her teacher's attention. Recognizing her natural ability, her teacher told her that she had a gift for art. Throughout high school, art became a central focus of her studies and creative life.

Marx later studied fashion design at the Richard Robinson Fashion Design Academy in Ottawa, where she was awarded Designer of the Year in 1992.

Horses have held a special place in Marx’s imagination for as long as she can remember. As a young girl, she dreamed of unicorns, while horse posters and sculptures filled her room. Although she never had the opportunity to own a horse herself, she embraced every opportunity to experience and connect with them. That lifelong fascination has evolved into a deeper artistic exploration of the horse, not simply as an animal, but as a symbol of freedom, individuality, strength, sensitivity and connection.

Marx’s recent work expands this exploration beyond the relationship between horses and humans, examining the individuality and dynamics found within the herd, and the ways horses can reflect aspects of our own lives. Her paintings invite contemplation of connection, belonging, trust, independence and the quiet strength we discover both within ourselves and through one another.

In 2026, Marx presented her first collection at the Merrickville Festival of the Arts and later exhibited her work and participated in a live painting event at the Hospitality Tent during the Ottawa International CSI4* CSI2* competition at Wesley Clover Parks. She has also participated in the 2026 Merrickville Studio Tour, where one of her paintings was selected by the Merrickville Artists’ Guild (MAG) as the cover artwork for the studio tour pamphlet.

At the heart of Marx’s practice is a sense of curiosity and wonder. An optimist by nature, she looks for beauty and possibility in the world around her, finding what she describes as a sense of magic in unexpected places. Through her paintings, she invites others to pause, look more closely and discover their own connection to the work.
